What is the 1099-MISC I received from California Franchise Tax Board?

Once again, California issued another stimulus payment to taxpayers who qualified.

Payments were sent out either via direct deposit or via debit card between October 2022 and February 2023.  Wait, at the time of this article, we are still in January!

So, yes, some payments are still rolling out.

If you received a 1099-MISC from the California Franchise Tax Board with an amount in the "Other Income" box, this is what it relates to.

This stimulus was called the Middle Class Tax Refund.

You are not taxed on this money in California, but this payout is taxable on your federal income tax return.

Who gets the stimulus?

You are eligible if you:

  • Filed your 2020 tax return by October 15, 2021
  • Meet the California adjusted gross income (CA AGI) limits detailed below
  • Were not eligible to be claimed as a dependent in the 2020 tax year
  • Were a California resident for six months or more of the 2020 tax year
  • Are a California resident on the date the payment is issued

  • Line 17 on your 2020 Form 540
  • Line 16 on your 2020 Form 540 2EZ
